What is Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) METRO project?

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has planned a 146 kilometer long, rail based Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) for Mumbai.
The first corridor of this project is proposed for Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Section, comprising 12 stations.
This project is being implemented by Mumbai Metro One Private Limited – a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed by Reliance Energy Ltd, Veolia Transport (France) and MMRDA.

Why do we need this project?

  • The existing public transportation systems viz. sub-urban trains and BEST buses are saturated.
  • The existing sub-urban trains connect the northern and southern parts of the city and there is huge gap in connectivity between eastern and western suburbs of the city. Also, the existing public transportation systems need an upgradation and expansion in terms of service.
  • The new Mass Rapid Transit System will fill this gap with improved services, lessening the traffic congestion and bridging the gap between eastern and western parts of the city.
  • This project will reduce the journey time from 90 minutes to 21 minutes, between Versova and Ghatkopar and will provide rail based access to MIDC, SEEPZ and other commercial developments.

How does MUMBAI METRO differ from present train services in Mumbai?

Mumbai Metro is going to run on a dedicated elevated corridor and shall have highest levels of comfort for the passengers viz. fully air-conditioned world class coaches, provision for lifts and escalators at stations, modern automatic fare collection system, highest levels of passenger security systems etc.
The existing sub-urban trains connect the northern and southern parts of the city. This project will provide East-West rail based connectivity to Central and Western suburbs.

What would be the fare structure for the service?

The fares of Mumbai Metro would be very economical and quite comparable with the other dominant modes of public transport i.e. BEST buses etc. The fare structure is
  • Rs. 6 upto 3 Kms.
  • Rs. 8 between 3 Kms.to 8 Kms.
  • Rs. 10 beyond 8 Kms.
# Fares indicated are for 2003-2004 level and shall be revised @ 11% every fourth year (rounded off to the nearest rupee). Fares shall be fixed by Government of Maharashtra, through a notification.

How will the MUMBAI METRO ply on the busy roads of Mumbai?

Mumbai Metro is going to run on a dedicated elevated Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) corridor. An elevated way structure will be constructed on the median of the road.
The stations on the complete route would be elevated, approach for the same would be from the pavement.

What would be the operational timings for METRO Rail Service in Mumbai?

It is planned to run the service for 18.5 hours everyday (5:30 AM till midnight) –with the station dwell time of 30 seconds. This will however be reviewed and the final schedule will be prepared before the system starts operation.

What would be the frequency of the trains?

The frequency of the trains would initially be 3.5 minutes which would be further increased over a period of time.

What would be the mode of ticket purchasing for commuters?

Metro is planned to have ultra modern Automatic Fare Collection System (AFC).
There would be options for taking a smart card (for multiple journeys) or single journey tokens. Other technologically advanced solutions are also being examined.

Will Metro Service add on to environmental pollution in Mumbai?

Metro is an absolute eco-friendly transportation system with no environmental pollution. It even causes lesser noise pollution during operation. It is expected that METRO Project would lead to significant reduction in vehicular pollution.
Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) study is being carried out and detailed Environment Management Plan (EMP) is being prepared in accordance with international practices.

What are the advantages of Metro Rail System in city like Mumbai?

  • Metro system requires 1/5th energy per passenger km. compared to road based system
  • Highest levels of safety
  • Ultra modern rail coaches
  • Carries same amount of traffic as 7 lanes of bus traffic or 24 lanes of motor cars (either way), if it is a medium capacity system
  • Is more reliable, comfortable and safer than road based system
  • Reduces journey time by anything between 50% and 75% depending upon road conditions

What are the features of METRO stations?

  • User friendly elevated stations and fully accessible to physically challenged people through provision of special lifts
  • The station will be designed on three levels – Road level, Concourse Level and Platform level
  • Two sets of covered staircase & up & down escalators are proposed on both sides of roads on footpath leading to concourse level
  • Concourse Level area is divided into Non- Paid area and Paid area
  • Non-Paid area will have facilities like ticketing counters, ticket vending machines, gates for entry/ exit & other facilities like retail outlets, ATMs, toilets etc
  • The Paid area will be accessible for valid ticket holders only and gives an access to platforms
  • Operational efficiency is achieved by making access points, all concourse and other public areas visible from the Station Control Room through which monitoring of public spaces, passenger flow at escalators etc can be done

What are the measures being taken/proposed to deal with traffic and safety issues during construction?

Mumbai Metro is committed to ensure proper safety and traffic management during construction phase by following world class practices. Some of the measures being taken are:
  • Traffic Management Plan and Traffic Diversion Plan is being worked out in consultation with international consultants and Traffic Police.

What is the total cost of the project and how much of it is being funded by the government?

The Versova – Andheri – Ghatkopar route of the Metro Project is being built at a total cost of Rs. 2,356 crores with a Viability Gap Fund of Rs. 650 crores being provided by the government.

How will it benefit the commuters along the route?

Metro along the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar route will benefit the commuters in a number of ways:
Serving one of the busiest routes: Versova–Andheri-Ghatkopar is one of the most congested routes in Mumbai. With the metro trains designed with more standing space, the number of people that can travel by the metro trains will be much more than the number of people traveling by road. This will thus help to ease the congestion / traffic on the road and the burden on other public transports. Mumbai Metro One expects to serve over 6 lakhs passengers daily.

Comfortable & safe journey: The Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar route will have AC trains with automatic door closing system i.e. the trains will move only when all the doors are closed. This reduces the risk on the life that the passengers take every time they hang out of the local trains. The coaches will be air-conditioned making the journey comfortable for the people and keeping them fresh on reaching office.

Reduced travel time: The entire 11.4 kms distance will be covered in 21 minutes as against the present 90 minutes.

Less pollution: As this will ease the traffic on the road, it will help in reducing vehicular pollution.

When will metro be operational?

We hope to complete the project well within the deadline subject to availability of land / Right of Way / clearances and make the Metro operational in 3 years time.

Will we be informed about the beginning of the construction activity in our area?

Residents of the particular area will be informed in advance about the beginning of the construction work in that area through various mediums – news, leaflets, ads, etc.

What will be the effect on the existing pollution on the roads?

Metro trains running along the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar route will help reduce significantly the existing noise and air pollution. The trains will help reduce traffic on the roads thus reducing vehicular pollution.
Use of latest technology in construction will ensure proper dust control and minimum noise pollution at the time of construction.
